by Don Peffer Saturday, May 5 was opening night for the 2001 Racing Season at Marion Center Speedway. The season opener was filled with excitement as the competitors took to the racetrack in the new FIVE Divisions set up at the quarter-mile dirt track. The new program for the speedway includes the Micro-Sprints, Pro-Stock (formerly Pure Stock), Strictly Stock (new), Super Stock (aka limited late models) and the Late Models, which do Not have the sideboards for this season. The Micro-Sprints took to the track first; fielding the largest number of cars with 32 signing in at the pits. Jim Wolfe (Zelienople), Brian Riddle (Brookville) and Rodney Glass (Fort Loudon) picked up wins in the Heats, and a Consolation Race was held to determine the bottom half of the feature line-up. Wayne Blolneheimback (Selinsgrove) picked up the consy win. Returning Points Champion, Jim Young (Johnstown) took the Micro-Sprint Feature by holding off last season's second place finisher, Jeff Bacha (Indiana). Bacha kept the the race exciting as he pushed Young to the limits of the race track to try and get around him. Brain Walker (Somerset) was not far behind the top two and placed third for the feature. Vince Berardinelli (Jeanette) finished fourth, Daryl Dunmire (Ford City) fifth, Wayne Blolneheimback (Selinsgrove) sixth, Rodney Glass (Fort Loudon) seventh, Mike Ruttkamp (Connecticut) eighth, Brian Riddle (Brookville) ninth and Karlin Miller (Apollo) tenth. For its debut at Marion Center Speedway, the Strictly Stock Division combined some old and new names for the feature. Former Pure Stock Division drivers Jody Bish (Mayport) and Robert James (Mahaffey) took first and second respectively. First time driver at the track, Tim Laughard (Strongstown) took third. Randy Reed (Punxsutawney) has been around the clay oval before and placed fourth in the feature. Kenny Mumau (East Run) took home fifth place for his first showing at the track. It was Randy Reed picking up the heat win for the Strictly Stocks. Scott Stein (Cherry Tree) was the first winner of the newly formed Pro-Stock Division for the 2001 racing season. It was a sweet victory for Stein who finished second in the Season Championship race last season. Stein looked really strong on the track and had also won his heat race. Mike Laughard (Twin Rocks) drove to a second place for his first time at the speedway. John Weaver (Commodore) place third, Jeff Sweeney (Marion Center) fourth, Alvin Little (Clymer) fifth, Jeff Taylor (Corsica) the Pure Stock Season Champion was sixth, Jim Laughard (Strongstown) seventh, Tim White (Punxsutawney) eighth, Eric Lingenfelter (Indiana) ninth and Harold Sebring (East Run) tenth. Tom Snyder (Mayport) picked up the heat race win. In the Super Stock, or otherwise referred to as the Limited Late Models, the top contenders that took heats were out of the feature early in a five car crash on the first lap. Maybe being to eager to take the first green flag of the season contributed to the mishap, but it left out heat race victors, Cheyenne Reed (Punxsutawney), and Ray Bowser (Black Lick) out of the race; as well as John Reed (Reynoldsville) Tom Jobe got mixed up in the early crash, but was able to continue along with Elkin Lingenfelter (Indiana) and Steve Watkins (Dixonville). After the crash, but was able to continue along with Elkin Lingenfelter (Indiana) and Steve Watkins (Dixonville). After the Super Stocks got things rolling, Ted Gallaher (Flinton) took the first win of the season. Elkin Lingenfelter came in second and Dan Stormer (Brookville) took third. Tim Hallowell (Reynoldsville) was fourth and Dave Buchanan (Cherry Tree) got fifth. Sixth went to Heath Gaston (Rochester Mills); seventh was Steve Watkins (Dixonville); eighth-Bob Hill (Ringgold); ninth Doug Boyer (Punxsutawney) and tenth went to Tom Jobe (Covode). The Late Models ran for the first time in a long time without sideboards at Marion Center Speedway. But winning the feature wasn't new for Jerry Redden (Mahaffey) who has been there and done that, but never enough. Redden took the lead away from Jeff Henry (Butler) before the crossed flags came out and stayed out front to secure the win. The going wasn't that easy though as Jason Carnahan (Indiana) and Henry battled behind the leader for second place; and both not giving up on taking the lead. Carnahan won out over Henry for second, Henry took third and Matt Gaston (Rochester Mills) was fourth. Bob Bertges (Pittsburgh) finished fifth, Brandon Wearing (Callery) sixth, Gary Pease (Ernest) seven, Tim Vranna (Starford) eighth, Mike McKendree (Brookville) ninth, and Paul Michny (Pine Flats) was tenth. The Late Model heats were won by Gary Pease and Bob Wearing (Callery). Looking ahead on the Marion Center Speedway schedule, next Saturday night be sure to bring Mom to the races for the Mother's Day Special. Also this month, there will be special races held this season on Memorial Day Monday as well as the regular Saturday night racing that weekend. So be sure to come to the top of the hill for the tops in racing at Marion Center Speedway. The track is located off Route 119 between Indiana and Punxsutawney.
