After being rained out on the first attempt at opening the 2004 racing season; Marion Center Speedway was able to put on a full show Saturday night, May 8. For the Mother’s Day Special, Marion Center Speedway passed out embroidered visors to all “moms”. The Pepsi Street Stocks were on the program first. Jeff Taylor from Corsica won the feature with Tim White of Punxsutawney close behind and Jason Fosnaught from Bairdford finished third. Fourth place went to Don Waltman (Punxsy.) and Skip Lindemuth (Hazen) was fifth. The rest of the top ten finishers were: Mike Dempsey-sixth (Brookville), Jamie Barber-seventh (Grampian) John Oaks-eighth (Punxsy.) Rich Shank-ninth (Clymer) and tenth place went to Rich Waltman from Coolspring. In the heat races, the winners were Chad Covatch (Punxsy) Eric Lingenfelter (Indiana) and Don Waltman (Punxsy). The Lias Tire Late Models were the next competitors on the track. The roll of the cube before the features had the lineups made with the top eight positions from the heats inverted for the feature event. This put Rick Strong from Home on the pole for the event. Strong was able to hold that front position throughout the entire twenty-lap feature to secure the first win of the season. Strong was chased early on in the race by Mike Blose from Dayton, and later in the event it was Dave Satterlee also from Home who was on his tail. Satterlee finished second and Blose fell back to fifth place at the checkers. Filling in between were Ken Schaltenbrand from Sarver-third, and Dave Peterman of Indiana-fourth. Rounding out he top ten in order were Rick Lias (Smicksburg)-6’th, Rod Phillips (Punxsutawney)-7’th, Jim Kurpakus (Leechburg)-8’th, B D Laraway (Harrison City)-9’th, and Jeff Henry (Butler)-10’th. Satterlee also won in the heat races, as well as Rick Lias and Ken Schaltembrand. Last years division champion, Dee Deyarmin continued with his winning ways in the Stitching Post Strictly Stock Division. Deyarmin from Glen Campbell started the feature behind Steve McKendree. McKendree led the second through fifth laps in the feature with Deyarmin right behind him. After the fifth lap, McKendree spun out and left the door open for Deyarmin to take over the lead. Deyarmin then went on to win the feature. Tony Hugill from Mahaffey finished second, Jack Mumau of East Run was third, Robert James from Mahaffey took fourth and fifth went to Tim Good from Vintondale. McKendree of Mahaffey finished sixth, Don Hickock from Punxsy was seventh, Dave Williams of Glen Campbell was eighth, an unknown driver of 777 finished ninth and Roger Stivenson from Freeport took tenth. The Heat races were won by Jack Mumau and Larry Matter from Plumboro. The final feature of the night was in the East American Motorsport Steel Block Limited Late Model Division. Gary Miller, Jr. from New Castle started on the pole in his #1 car, but by the third lap another #1, the 1H of Larry Hollenbaugh had taken over the lead. Hollenbaugh from Punxsutawney won the feature with Miller trailing behind him in second. Bruce Walker from Punxsutawney took third, Chris Johnston of Marion Center was fourth, and Shane McMeans of Dayton finished fifth. Sixth place was taken by Tom Shaffer (Punxsutawney) Tom Jobe (Covode) was seventh, Bill Phillips (Blandburg) was eighth, Dan Stormer (Brookville) was ninth and tenth place went to Tom Snyder from Mayport. In the preliminary heats, Tom Shaffer and Shane McMeans were the winners. Thanks to Vanderpools Checkered Flag Collectibles for providing door prizes, as well as Sandy Kaye’s Restaurant, Furniture World East, and Marion Center Speedway. Looking ahead on the racing schedule, don’t miss the Memorial Day Special on Monday, May 31. The special event will once again feature the Twin Twenty-Five lap races for the Late Models. Racing will also take place on the Saturday nights before and after the Monday night special races. For the tops in racing, we’ll see you at the top of the hill at Marion Center Speedway; it’s just 3 miles North of Marion Center on Route 119, and a fifteen minute drive Indiana or Punxsutawney.

Dark clouds loomed overhead at Marion Center
Speedway Saturday night, and even an occasional raindrop would fall. But
loyal fans and drivers waited out the passing showers for a great night of
racing in all four divisions.
The Stitching Post Strictly Stock division
was the first feature of the evening. After finishing third in his heat race,
Larry Matter of Plumboro started on the pole for the feature. When the green
flag dropped it was all Larry Matter up front for the entire race. Robert
James (of Mahaffey) started behind Matter, but was overtaken by Steve
McKendree after the third lap. The leaders soon caught the back of the field
and started lapping cars, but the car McKendree couldn’t get around was
Matter. McKendree (Mahaffey) took second place, and Justin Queen (Irvona) who
had started second finished third after keeping up with the leaders weaving in
and out of cars on the way. Ed Keilman (Mundy’s Corner) finished fourth and
Robert James was fifth. The rest of the top ten filled in with Don Hickock
(Punxsutawney)-6’th, Bruce Large (Saltsburg)-7’th, Dave Williams (Glen
Campbell)-8’th, Tim Good (Vintondale)-9’th, and Dee Deyarmin (Glen
Campbell)-10’th. Three heats were held for the Stitching Post Strictly Stock
division and those winners are: Don Hickok, Robert James, and Justin Queen.
In
the East American Motorsport Steel Block Limited Latemodel division, it was
also a flag to flag race with one leader-Dwayne Taneyhill (from Bellwood).
Taneyhill was pursued heavily by Bruce Walker and Shawn McGarvey. Walker
(Punxsutawney) was just passed by McGarvey (Coalport) after the halfway flags
of the race when a caution put the race on hold. In an attempt to get the
jump on McGarvey, Walker jumped too soon and was caught by track officials for
“jumping ahead on the restart.” Walker was docked two positions for the error
putting him in fifth place. Between Walker and McGarvey’s second place, were
Chris Johnston (Marion Center) and Bernie Whiteford (Hastings). There were
several cautions during the feature and Bruce Walker wasn’t the only driver
caught by officials trying too hard to get out of the congested pack too
soon. But after the checkered flag was thrown and everything was sorted out
the top ten were: Taneyhill, McGarvey, Johnston, Whiteford, Walker, Gary
Miller, Jr. (New Castle), Larry Hollenbaugh (Punxsutawney), Dan Stormer
(Brookville), Tom Snyder (Mayport) and Bill Strong (Indiana). The preliminary
races in the East American Motorsport Steel Block Limited Latemodels were won
by Bernie Whiteford, Shawn McGarvey, and Bruce Walker.
John Oaks from Punxsutawney was the leader
of the Pepsi Street Stocks from start to finish. Oaks started on the pole
with Scott Alvetro (of Reynoldsville) lined up behind him and Alvetro stayed
right behind Oaks the entire race for a second place finish. Tim White
(Punxsutawney) started in the fourth position but moved up to third bringing
with him the fifth place starting car, Jeff Sweeney (Marion Center) to take
fourth at the checkers. Harold Sebring was able to move up two positions in
the feature to take home fifth place. Rounding out the top ten in order were
Jeff Taylor (Corsica)-6’th, Rich Waltman (Coolspring)-7’th, Dave Potter, Jr. (Smokerun)-8’th,
John Weaver (Commodore)-9’th and Eric Lingenfelter (Indiana)-10’th. Tim
White, Scott Alvetro, and Eric Lingenfelter won heat races.
Dave Peterman won the Lias Tire Latemodels
feature by staying in the front from green to checkers. Peterman (Indiana)
led all twenty laps to secure the win, but it wasn’t just that easy as Rod
Phillips (Punxsutawney) made his up from fifth to challenge for the lead and
ended up battling with Dave Satterlee (Home) to stay in second place.
Satterlee moved up from ninth to challenge for the front positions and ended
with third. Steve Everhart (Canoe Creek) came to the races for the first time
and ran away with fourth place after starting third and winning his heat
race. Jerry Redden (Mahaffey) got fired up this weekend and after debuting at
Dog Hollow Friday night, took fifth place at Marion Center. The rest of the
top ten for the Lias tire Latemodels in order were: Ken Schaltenbrand
(Sarver)-6’th, Dave Blazavich (Indiana)-7’th, Bob Sheesley (Marion
Center)-8’th, Spanky Daugherty (Sarver)-9’th, and Rick Strong (Home)-10’th.
Rick Lias (Smicksburg), Steve Everhart, and Mike Blose (Dayton) were winners
in the heat races.
Race fans! Be sure to mark your calendars
for a special race at Marion Center Speedway on Monday, May 31 for the
Memorial Day Special-the Twin Twenty-Five lap features for the Lias Tire
Latemodels. Special thanks to the following sponsors for door prizes:

Jim
Boyer took the lead early into the Pepsi Street Stock division’s feature at
Marion Center Speedway Saturday night. Boyer started the race in the seventh
position and by lap five he was in the front ahead of the pole-sitter, Eric
Lingenfelter. Boyer and Lingenfelter had a good race for the feature, but
Boyer was better this time winning the feature with Lingenfelter finishing
second. Jeff Taylor came up from twelfth to finish third and Jake Ayers moved
from sixteenth to fourth. Even fifth place finisher, Jason Fosnaught came up
from nineteenth at the first green. The rest of the top ten for the Pepsi
Street Stocks were: Dave Potter, Jr., Nick Goss, Skip Lindemuth, Matt Hugill,
& Tim White. The heat races were won by Jeff Taylor, Tim White and Scott
Stein.
Rick Strong won his second feature of the season in the Lias Tire Latemodel
division. Strong picked up the first win in the first feature of the 2004
season and has now made it two out of three by winning Saturday night.
Strong's victory was not an easy task with pole sitter, Jerry Redden trying to
get his spot back and Dave Satterlee charging to the front trying to pickup
his first MC win this season, and even Alex Ferree who started on the outside
pole was challenging Strong. At the checkers it was Strong –First, Satterlee-second,
Ferree-third, Redden-fourth, and Dave Peterman, last week’s winner-fifth.
Rounding out the top ten in order: Rick Lias, Ken Schaltenbrand, Tony Raneri,
B D Laraway, and Keith Whitherite. The Lias Tire Latemodel heats were won by
Mike Blose, Dave Peterman, and Rick Lias.
Steve McKendree took two laps to take the lead in the Stitching Post Strictly
Stock Division feature, a spot that he wouldn’t give up the rest of the race.
Justin Queen started on the pole and lost that position to McKendree after
leading the first two laps. Queen then had other problems that led to an
early retirement. McKendree had started fifth and was chased by Robert James
most of the race from James’ sixth place start. Then Dee Deyarmin was in
position to challenge the leader. But at the end McKendree was first,
Deyarmin-second, Tony Hugill-third, Tim Good-fourth, and Aaron Walker was
fifth. Robert James finished sixth, Larry Matter-seventh, Don Hickok-eighth,
Bruce Large-ninth, and Jeff Jones was tenth. Dee Deyarmin, Larry Matter, and
Tim Good won the heat races.
Larry Hollenbaugh took the lead
at the halfway point of the East American Motorsport Limited Latemodels’
feature. Starting in the eleventh position, in took him ten laps to get to
first and ten more to win the race. Chris Johnston started right in front of
Hollenbaugh, but finished right behind him. Tom Shaffer started on the pole,
but was in an accident that retired him for the evening (hopefully only for
the evening-it wasn’t pretty)-Jim Detman took the lead after the demise of
Shaffer and held that place for seven laps before Hollenbaugh took over.
Hollenbaugh took first, Chris Johnston was second, Mark Stiffler-third, Bruce
Walker-fourth, and Clay Copeman-fifth. Sixth place went to Jim Detman, Denny
Walker was seventh, Dan Stormer-eighth, Cheyenne Reed-ninth, and Tom
Snyder-tenth. Cheyenne Reed, Larry Hollenbaugh, and Bruce Walker were winners
in the heat races.
Race fans! Next Saturday will be
the inaugural running of four cylinder, front wheel drive cars at Marion
Center Speedway. The “Rice Burners” will be here for a trial run and may be
added to the program for the rest of the season if the
administration/management of the track feel it is an asset to the facility.
Be sure to mark your calendars for a special race at Marion Center Speedway on
Monday, May 31 for the Memorial Day Special-the Twin Twenty-Five lap features
for the Lias Tire Latemodels-which will pay $1500 to win each of the
twin-twenty-five lap features (thanks to Pepsi and Don Huey Custom Building
and Remodeling. The E. Am. Motorsport Limited Lates are welcome to run with
the Latemodels that night, and the nights entertainment will also include
racing for the Pepsi Street Stocks and the Stitching Post Strictly Stocks.

The Marion Center Speedway was filled with action Saturday night on the quarter-mile clay oval between Indiana and Punxsutawney, off Route 119.
The Stitching Post Strictly Stock division
was the first feature of the night. Tony Hugill took the lead first and held
onto that for four laps until a caution came out to stop the race. On the
restart, Robert James from Mahaffey was able to get the jump on Hugill to take
the lead. The two competitors played cat & mouse chasing each other around
the circle, but Hugill was unable to regain the lead and finished second to
Robert James. Larry Matter moved into third place, Dave Williams finished
fourth, and last week’s winner, Steve McKendree was fifth. Bobby Nole took
home sixth place; Bruce Large-seventh, John Poling III-eighth; Jack Mumau-ninth;
and tenth went to Dee Deyarmin. In the heat races, Don Hickok and Jack Mumau
were the victors.
Larry Hollenbaugh from Punxsutawney picked
up his third win in four features in Marion Center Speedway’s East American
Motorsport Steel Block Limited Late Model Division. Mark Stiffler started on
the outside pole and led the cars around the track past the halfway point of
the feature. While Stiffler was holding his own against Tom Snyder and Bruce
Walker, Larry Hollenbaugh was working his way to the front from his 13’th
starting position. By lap 13, averaging a car every lap, Hollenbaugh was in
the lead. Hollenbaugh, Stiffler and Bruce Walker were joined in a battle for
the lead by Denny Walker and Dan Stormer. Then after the white flag came out,
coming down to the checkers, Bruce Walker made contact with Stiffler, as the
two were running second and third. The Checkered flag was thrown along with
yellow flag ending the race and stopping the advancement of the rest of the
field. Bruce Walker was charged with the caution relegating him to the back
of the current field, and the cars from Hollenbaugh on back were scored from
the previous green lap. The outcome: Larry Hollenbaugh-First, Mark Stiffler-Second,
Dan Stormer-Third, Tom Snyder-Fourth, and Denny Walker-Fifth. Rounding out
the top ten were: Chris Johnston-sixth, Jim Baker-seventh, Rich Womeldorf-eighth,
Jim Detman-ninth, and Tom Jobe-tenth. Larry Hollenbaugh also won his heat
race; and the other heat was won by Scott Stein.
Jeff Taylor became the first repeat winner
in the Pepsi Street Stock Division. After having a different winner every
week, Taylor was able to break the spell and break away from the rest of the
pack for the victory giving him wins in two out of four of the Pepsi Street
Stock features. Matt Hugill started on the pole and Rich Waltman took the
lead away from him on the second lap, and by the third lap, Eric Lingenfelter
was the leader. Lingenfelter led much of the race from that point as things
settled down in the middle of the race. Towards the end of the twenty-lap
feature, Jeff Taylor took the opportunity to take the lead from Lingenfelter
and was able to outrun him in several restarts near the end of the race.
Taylor picked up the win, Lingenfelter was second, third went to John Weaver,
Scott Stein was fourth, and Bob Hill was fifth. Sixth place was where Matt
Hugill finished up, Rich Waltman right behind him for seventh, Jake Ayers came
in eighth, Gregg Blystone picked up ninth and Scott Charles finished tenth.
Both Blystone and Charles were first-timers at the track. In the heats:
Scott Stein easily won his heat and Tim White took the other heat. In the Lias Tire and Auto Service Late Model Division, in Satterlee in the beginning and Satterlee at the end but it wasn’t the same car, or driver. Ben Satterlee started the Lias Tire feature on the pole and did very well as a young driver in keeping the lead for seven laps. Then others started pushing for the lead, which Ben held his ground until it was Dad racing up beside him to challenge the young driver’s skill. Dave Satterlee, Ben’s father, passed Ben and opened the door for others to follow. Slowly Ben drifted back into the pack as Dave continued to press onward in the lead. Dave Satterlee won his first feature this season at Marion Center, after two second places, and the victory at Dog Hollow Speedway Friday night gave him back-to-back victories. Jerry Redden took second place, Ken Schaltenbrand finished third, Alex Ferree was fourth, and Rick Lias took fifth. Sixth place went to Mike Blose, Tony Raneri was seventh, Rick Strong-eighth, Rick Davis-ninth, and Chuck Sarver-tenth. And Ben Satterlee-just bumped out of the top ten-took eleventh. In the Lias Tire heats: Ken Schaltenbrand and Rick Lias were the winners. The newest feature of the night was in the Don Huey Custom Building and Remodeling 4 Cylinder Rice Burners. Ten competitors came out for the first running of the four cylinder class at Marion Center Speedway. An old familiar name crept up as the cars took the track-Randy Reed, a former competitor from Punxsutawney in the Pro-Stock division of last season was behind the wheel of a Dodge Neon to compete in the races. Reed did very well by taking the heat race and the feature with somewhat of a clean sweep. Reed’s toughest competition was Mike Ziner who finished a close second, and Dan Adams looked strong in third place. Brent Buterbaugh swept up fourth place and George McFeaters and teammate Mike Hurd were fifth. Wayne Keith took sixth, Burt Whetzel was seventh, Glenn Carpenter-eighth, Andrew Satterlee (younger brother of Ben) took ninth, and tenth went to Paul Douglas. This could be one of those classes that grows on you. The racing was competitive, and a lot of the drivers were not experienced veterans of the track like Reed. We’ll need to keep an eye on this division to see how well it grows and which direction it’s headed. It could be something good for new drivers to try and “get their feet wet”, and gain experience for future moves into other divisions-like Jeff Gordon starting with go-karts-or just a low budget race division for backyard mechanics and people that just want to race without all the hassle of sponsors and spending the kids’ college fund. Good luck four cylinders, and spread the word-it’s fun and exciting-and cheap but worth it too.

Light rain or a drizzle
throughout much of the day, and overcast skies kept Marion Center Speedway’s
clay oval damp and tacky for Saturday night’s races. The track conditions are
always favored by some and disliked by a few, but there wasn’t any dust in the
fans’ eyes so they could witness all the exciting action on the track.
The Pepsi Street Stock
division was the first feature of the night. John Oaks started on the pole and
was running great, but the front-runners in the race soon found themselves
intermixed with slower cars as they started to lap cars. After the halfway
flags came out, Scott Stein found an opening to shoot through to take the
lead. Stein won the feature with Oaks coming in second place. Scott Alvetro
picked up third followed by Eric Lingenfelter in fourth, Bob Hill in fifth,
and Tim White was sixth. Next came Jeff Taylor-seventh, Jim Boyer-eighth,
Skip Lindemuth-ninth, and Don Waltman in tenth. The preliminary heats were
won by John Weaver and Scott Stein.
B D Laraway started on the
pole of the Lias Tire Latemodels, and went on to take the checkered flag for
his first win in driving Late Models. If it wouldn’t have been for Sammy
Stile, Laraway would’ve went flag to flag in the lead. Early into the race
Stile made a pass on Laraway for the lead, then coming off number 4 turn,
something let loose in the Stile car and he was left sitting waiting on tow.
The incident put Laraway back into the lead, which he held onto despite the
efforts of other tough competitors. Mike Blose, Jerry Redden, Rod Phillips
were just some of the drivers that came close to taking the lead, but it
wasn’t to be-it was BD’s night. Finishing second to Laraway was Rodney
Phillips; Jerry Redden was in third, Mike Blose took fourth, and Dave Peterman
was fifth. Dave Blazavich finished sixth with Dave Satterlee in seventh,
Bobby Stone in eighth, Keith Witherite was ninth and Chuck Sarver took tenth.
Dave Satterlee and Dave Peterman each won a heat race for the Lias Tire Late
Models.
The end of the Stitching
Post Strictly Stock feature was exciting with the lead changing every other
lap. Bruce Large started on the pole and held the front position for the
first ten laps. Steve McKendree then passed Large to lead two laps, then
debris on the racetrack brought out a caution flag to slow things down. The
restart was what Jack Mumau needed to get around McKendree. Mumau was able to
keep the lead for the remaining few laps for the victory. Steve McKendree
took second, Robert James was third, Dave Williams took fourth and fifth went
to Tim Good. Rounding out the top ten were in order: Bruce Large, Tom Baun,
Justin Queen, Don Hickok, and Dee Deyarmin. Justin Queen and Robert James won
the heat races.
There were some exciting
times in the East American Motorsport Steel Block Limited Latemodel division
feature. Shawn McGarvey brought the cars onto the track from his pole
position starting point and continued to lead until a caution came out after
four laps into the race. McGarvey was not involved in the incident, but for
some reason McGarvey went to the pits under caution and never returned. The
action of McGarvey put Bernie Whiteford in the leaders position. Whiteford
was pursued by Denny Walker and then Cheyenne Reed came around Walker to
challenge Whiteford, but Reed wasn’t able to pass Whiteford either. Larry
Hollenbaugh had worked his way to the front and also tried to pass Whiteford
but wasn’t able to do it. Bernie Whiteford picked up the checkered flag for
first; Larry Hollenbaugh was second, Cheyenne Reed-third, Chris
Johnston-fourth and Denny Walker-fifth. Sixth through tenth positions were
filled by Dan Stormer-sixth, Ray Weaver-seventh, Carl Ruth-eighth, Tom Jobe-ninth
and an unidentified new driver to the track was tenth driving the 1B car. The
heat races were won by Shane McMeans and Tom Snyder.
The Don Huey Custom
Building and Remodeling 4 Cylinder Rice Burner division was won by Randy Reed
for the second week in a row, which makes Reed undefeated in the division.
Reed pulled away from the field after coming from last in a field of a dozen
cars to take the lead at the halfway point from Dan Adams who led the first
half of the feature. Dennis Weisgarber followed Reed around Adams but was
unable to keep up with Reed and finished in second with Adams in third. Matt
Shirk finished fourth, Jason Peters-fifth, Andrew Satterlee-sixth, Gregg
Satterlee-seventh, Virgil Small –eighth, Wayne Keith-ninth, and an
unidentified 18F was tenth. Finishing out the field were Bert Wetzel and
Brent Buterbaugh. The heats for the Don Huey 4 Cylinders were won by Randy
Reed and Jason Peters.
The Twin Twenty-five lap
features for the Lias Tire Latemodels that was scheduled for Memorial Day and
rained out has been rescheduled for Saturday, July31 as a regular night of
racing. The Twin twenty-five lap features will have preliminary heats for
each with only a pre-determined number of cars from the first feature
automatically qualifying for the second feature. The payoff for the
Latemodels will be $1500 MINIMUM to win each feature-the payoff continues to
grow as new sponsors come forward to increase the purse (thanks to Pepsi and
Don Huey Custom Building and Remodeling, and there’s always room for
more-contact the speedway at 724-397-2620 or 724-397-2718 for more
information). The race time will be 7:30 PM, same as Saturday nights’ regular
programs. The night’s events will also include the Stitching Post Strictly
Stocks, and the Don Huey Custom Building and Remodeling 4 Cylinder Rice
Burners. The East American Motorsport Steel Block Limited Late Models are
invited to run with the Lias Tire Latemodels that night. All other track
rules will be in effect.
Kid’s Bike Races have been
scheduled! The bike races will be held during intermission on June 26, July
17, and the Championship on August 14. The Home Made Restaurant in Home and
Pepsi are helping to sponsor this seasons bike races.

It was a great night of
racing at Marion Center Speedway Saturday night with friendly skies shining
overhead and a shiny red pace truck from Kelly Chrysler/Jeep /Dodge of
Brookville to lead the features onto the track and set the pace for restarts
when necessary. Jerome Gearhart, Service Manager for Kelly brought the truck
to the track and Bill Kelly from the dealership was also on board the Hemi
Sport model of the Dodge Ram truck.
Aaron Walker was a good
leader in the Stitching Post Strictly Stock feature as he took his line from
the outside pole position to the checkered flag. Walker from Sykesville, led
the entire race with Tim Good right behind him (where he started) and Dee
Deyarmin had the starting position behind Good and finished third-behind
Good. That’s as far as the line-up went in following the leader with Robert
James coming up from the 17’th slot to take fourth splitting Deyarmin and Jack
Mumau to break the chain. Sixth place went to Steve McKendree; followed by
Justin Queen in seventh, Dave Williams-8’th, Mike Boring-9’th, and Ryan
Daughenbaugh in tenth. The Stitching Post Strictly Stock heats were won by
Jack Mumau, Don Hickok and Dee Deyarmin.
In the East American
Motorsport Steel Block Limited Latemodel division feature the Punxsutawney
Trio swept the top three positions. Bruce Walker started on the pole and kept
the lead throughout the feature. Walker was pursued heavily by Cheyenne Reed
who started beside him, but Reed couldn’t get past Walker. Larry Hollenbaugh
was hooked up again Saturday night coming from eleventh on the starting grid
to challenge Walker for the lead in laps 14 through 20 after Hollenbaugh
passed Reed, and settled into second place. Following Reed’s third place
finish was Alex Nicoletti in fourth and Chris Johnston in fifth. Gary Miller,
Jr. took sixth; Dave Buchanan-7’th, Dan Stormer was eighth after having two
positions taken away from him for jumping on the last restart after a caution;
Clay Copeman was ninth, and tenth went to Ray Weaver. Ray Weaver had won his
heat race as well as Chris Johnston and Rich Womeldorf. –On a side note, Tom
Snyder who was ejected from last weeks races for rough driving and then given
two weeks off for the hand gestures he made at the officials while leaving the
track, has been suspended indefinitely from being at Marion Center Speedway
for continuing his actions and the actions of his pit crew after leaving the
racing surface area. Good sportsmanship is a must for all competitors in any
sport, and the family friendly atmosphere of Marion Center Speedway should not
be compromised by inappropriate actions of participants, spectators or staff.
The Pepsi Street Stock
division was the next feature race of the night. Eric Lingenfelter took the
pole for this event and was able to lead the first seven laps before he spun
out and Jim Boyer took over the lead. Boyer started in eighth place and had
caught up to Lingenfelter thus getting the lead with Lingenfelter’s spin out.
Jeff Taylor worked his way from fifteenth into second place to put Tim White
in third after White had started in second. One of the new people at the
track Saturday night, Paul Schreckengost of Creighton, took fourth place and
Scott Stein rounded out the top five. Jake Ayers finished sixth; Rob Shook
(also new from Creighton) –seventh, Eric Lingenfelter ended the race in
eighth, John Weaver –ninth and Jason Fosnaught was tenth. Taking the heats
for the Pepsi Street Stocks were Jim Boyer, Jake Ayers and John Oaks.
Ken Schaltenbrand started
the Lias Tire Latemodel feature on the outside pole and led the first eight
laps, but before the half-way flags came out, Dave Satterlee who started in
line behind Schaltenbrand made a pass for the lead that he would not
relinquish for the rest of the race. Satterlee was caught by Mike Blose who
only had to keep up with Satterlee from the beginning of the race, starting
directly behind him, but the other cars on the track kept “following the
leader” a little difficult at times. Satterlee knew that any mistake would
let Blose into the lead, but Dave Satterlee didn’t make any mistakes to win
the Lias Tire Latemodel Feature with Mike Blose in a close second place
finish. Ken Schaltenbrand took third place; Rod Phillips was fourth, and Rick
Lias finished fifth. Rounding out the top ten in order were Rick
Strong-sixth, Dave Blazavich-seventh, Tom Kitchen-eighth, Chuck Sarver-ninth
and then Rick Davis. In the preliminary heats, Rick Strong and Rod Phillips
were the winners.
Randy Reed swept the Don
Huey Custom Building and Remodeling 4 Cylinder Rice Burners again for the
third straight win, but this time it wasn’t as easy. Reed started last on the
inside row of an eighteen car starting grid (It’s Growing!) and a new driver
in the division, Doug Hollenbaugh (only new to this division of racing) was
starting near the front and determined to keep fellow Punxsy native out of
first place. Hollenbaugh nearly succeeded in dethroning the Rice Burner King,
Randy Reed but on the last turn of the last lap, Randy Reed was coming past
Hollenbaugh to take the checkers. Hollenbaugh gave Reed a friendly “nudge”
towards the wall as Reed went by him in a last ditch effort to win the race,
but Reed handled that too and won the third straight 4 Cylinder feature. Doug
Hollenbaugh took second and was there to congratulate Reed when he posed for
photos after the race. Brent Buterbaugh took third place, Chad Satterlee was
fourth (yes it’s yet another Satterlee on the track)-followed by Andrew
Satterlee in fifth and Greg Satterlee in sixth. Richie Brown started on the
pole for the feature and finished seventh; Eric Myers was eighth, Glen
Carpenter was ninth and Wayne Keith was tenth. Winning the heats were Andrew
Satterlee and Jeremy Detwiler. The 4 Cylinders are really having fun on the
track, and there might be a little more bumping, or “rubbing” going on that
makes the track officials nervous. But you know they’re having fun when Greg
Satterlee comes onto the track in his miniature station wagon with luggage
strapped to the roof like the “family truckster” in a Chevy Chase movie.
Next week at the track
will be the “Father’s Day Special” so bring Dad to a night of racing for
Father’s Day. Also, be sure to mark your calendars for this year’s
Independence Day celebration with racing and fireworks on Saturday night, July
3. As a part of the regular racing program, a fireworks display by the
Starfire Corp. will light up the skies again this year.
The Twin Twenty-five lap
features for the Lias Tire Latemodels that was scheduled for Memorial Day and
rained out has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 31 as a regular night of
A Special race for the
East American Motorsport Limited Latemodels will be held on Wednesday,
August 4, 2004. Keep watching for more details-as of now the Pepsi Street
Stocks and the Stitching Post Strictly Stocks as well as the Don Huey $
Cylinders may also be running that night with the Limited Lates.

Marion Center Speedway
hopes everyone had a Happy Father’s Day. Saturday night a shiny yellow Dodge
Ram pace truck from Kelly Chrysler/Jeep /Dodge of Brookville led the features
onto the track and set the pace for restarts when necessary. Jerome Gearhart,
Service Manager for Kelly brought the “Rumble Bee”, Hemi-powered special
edition truck to the track.
The Pepsi Street Stock
division was the first feature race of the night. Scott Stein from Cherry
Tree took the race from start to finish in front of the pack. Stein moved
around Jeff Hoffman on the first lap to take the lead from the
‘pole-sitter’and held the front line the rest of the race. Tim White was
close behind Stein for the first half of the race, but then was retired
early. Don Waltman came up from 8’th place on the start to challenge Stein,
but could only follow for a second place finish. Third place went to Jamie
Barber, John Oaks took 4’th, and Bob Hill was fifth. Jake Ayers took sixth
with Jeff Taylor finishing seventh, Jeff Bastin was eighth, Matt Hugill
–ninth, and Denny Keener took tenth. In the preliminary heats, Bob Hill,
Scott Stein, and Tim White were all winners.
The Lias Tire Latemodel
feature was another “one leader” race. That one leader was Sammy Stile from
Charleroi. Stile started on the outside pole position and immediately took
control of the race. Mike Blose was in the second row behind the pole and was
also determined to get the lead. Stile and Blose battled the entire twenty
laps for the lead with at least three other cars on their tails with any one
of them having the potential to win the feature event. Sammy Stile won the
race with Mike Blose close behind for second and winning the battle for third
was Rick Strong over Dave Peterman who took fourth and Dave Satterlee taking
fifth. Not far behind was the rest of the field with sixth through tenth
places filled by Rick Lias, Dave Blazavich, Gary Pease, B D Laraway, and Ben
Satterlee. Winning the Lias Tire heats were Chuck Sarver, Mike Blose, and
Sammy Stile.
Robert James from Mahaffey
won his second Stitching Post Strictly Stock feature Saturday night by going
flag to flag in the lead. James started on the outside pole and took the lead
on the first lap. Jack Mumau came up from eighth place to challenge for the
lead and was on the back bumper of James at the halfway point of the feature.
Mumau came in second and Tom Baun went from first to third in the race. Dee
Deyarmin moved through the pack from ninth to fourth and Don Hickok finished
fifth. Tim Good took sixth place and was followed by Steve McKendree in
seventh, Larry Matter-eighth, Aaron Walker-ninth, and Justin Queen was tenth.
Aaron Walker, Don Walker, and Robert James won the three Stitching Post heat
races.
In the East American
Motorsport Steel Block Limited Latemodel division feature, Larry Hollenbaugh
from Punxsutawney picked up his fourth feature win of the season. Cheyenne
Reed got a good start on the feature from the outside pole position taking the
lead from Hollenbaugh who was the pole position leader. Reed held off
Hollenbaugh until Hollenbaugh took advantage of a restart near the halfway
point of the race to get back ahead of Reed. Chris Johnston then separated
the two and Reed didn’t get back in second settling for third behind Johnston
who got second close behind Hollenbaugh. Fourth place went to Dave Buchanan
and Bruce Walker picked up fifth. Shane McMeans finished sixth, Dan Stormer
took seventh, Bill Strong-eighth, Carl Ruth-ninth, and Bill Phillips took
tenth. Shane McMeans and Chris Johnston each took a heat race for the East
American Motorsport Steel Block Limited Latemodels.
Randy Reed elected to
start in the back of the Don Huey Custom Building and Remodeling 4 Cylinder
Rice Burners for the feature, and the move didn’t work out, although it
probably had nothing to do with the outcome. Randy Reed was quickly moving
through the pack of cars to the front when a flat tire barely slowed his
progress, but the black flag thrown on him for that flat tire digging into the
racetrack sent him to the pits and he didn’t return. In the front of the
race, Richie Brown was busy taking the lead from Doug Hollenbaugh.
Hollenbaugh started on the outside pole and led the first four laps of the
feature until Brown caught him from his sixth place starting position and then
passed him for the lead and eventually the win de-throning the Rice-Burner
King, Randy Reed (although this was the only feature not won by Randy Reed).
Chad Satterlee moved from third to second place in the race, and Dan Adams
moved up from eighth place to third. Hollenbaugh came in fourth and for his
first time running this division at Marion Center Speedway, Bob Rougeaux, Jr.
finished fifth. Sixth place went to Merle Bolette, seventh was Greg Satterlee,
Glen Carpenter took eighth, Thomasina Swartz finished ninth and tenth place
went to Wayne Keith. Randy Reed and Chad Satterlee were the winners in the
heats.
Next week at the track
will be the first running of the Kid’s Bike Races. Be sure to have bikes and
helmets on hand to participate in the intermission event sponsored in part by
the Home Maid restaurant, soft serve and mini-golf in Home. Also, be sure to
mark your calendars for this year’s Independence Day celebration with racing
and fireworks on Saturday night, July 3. As a part of the regular racing
program, a fireworks display by the Starfire Corp. will light up the skies
again this year.
