The Saturday night racing program was cut short at Marion Center Speedway due to persistent showers that kept coating the quarter-mile clay oval throughout the evening. Finally a steadier rain put down enough water to end the racing for the night with two of the five features left to finish the program. Next Saturday the features will be made up usually before the night’s regular program begins. The Pikel’s Universal Auto Repair Strictly Stocks took their turn at going first on the track and Gregg Buterbaugh from Clymer earned his first feature win in the race. Buterbaugh was able to take the lead on a restart after the caution flag was thrown on lap nine of the fifteen-lap feature. A. J. Flick started on the outside pole and took the lead over Brett Bingaman from the beginning. When the race was temporarily stopped for an incident on the track, Flick didn’t get a good jump on the restart but Buterbaugh did with Ray Hickok, Jr. right behind him. Both Buterbaugh and Hickok passed Flick on the restart. Hickok, from Commodore, kept a lot of pressure on Buterbaugh for the remaining laps, but Buterbaugh was in the groove for the victory and rode it out for the first feature win of his racing career. Hickok finished in second place and Brett Bingaman from Cherry Tree was third, Flick from Pittsburgh took fourth and Nate Smith from Glen Campbell was fifth. Rounding out the top tem of the Pikel’s Universal Auto Repair Strictly Stocks were Steve McKendree, Bobby Noel, Tim Laughard, Tim Schreckengost and Larry McBryar, Jr. Bingaman, Flick and Smith were winners of the preliminary heat races. Like Buterbaugh in the race before him, Gregg Satterlee also drove a number 22 car to victory. The difference is that Satterlee from Rochester Mills, picked up his third win this season in the Lias Tire Latemodel division. Starting sixth in the nineteen-car field, Satterlee took eight laps to get into the lead. Denton Boyer had it first with his outside pole position start; then it was Clate Copeman who started on the pole that took the lead; then Satterlee became the third and final leader of the twenty-lap feature. Copeman pressured Satterlee throughout the remaining laps, but the young Satterlee has been in the pressure cooker before and still keeps his cool to handle the situation. Copeman from Greensburg took second place, and Jerry Redden from Mahaffey was third after starting fourth. Rod Phillips from Punxsutawney was fourth after starting tenth, and Boyer also of Punxsutawney finished fifth. Next across the finish line were Dwayne Taneyhill, Sammy Stile, Dane Laraway, Matt Gaston and Dave Blazavich. The Lias Tire Latemodel heat races were won by Matt Gaston, Gregg Satterlee and Gary Lyle. The final race that was able to be completed Saturday night was the Q-102 Today’s Hot Country Front Wheel Drive 4 Cylinder Rice Burners. Bob Pease from Blairsville is the back-to-back victor of the division by winning his second feature in a row at Marion Center Speedway. Pease started fourth and was running second to Chris Hickok when a caution flag was thrown. It had been previously determined by track officials that Hickok had jumped the start of the race on the first green and would be penalized two positions at the next opportunity in the race whether it was at the checkered flag or a yellow flag. Hickok led the race from the third lap to the ninth of twelve laps for the feature when the yellow flag did come out stopping the race and providing the opportunity to adjust Hickok’s position for the two-position penalty. The adjustment on the track gave the lead to Bob Pease and put Tina Weaver from Marion Center in second then Hickok. The rest of the race finished out in that order Pease, Weaver and Hickok; followed by Larry Depp of Punxsutawney and fifth place went to Tom Pavelko of Cherry Tree. Rounding out the top ten were Jon Lee, Denny Phillips, Shane Weaver, Stephanie Whiteford and Brandon Reitz. Chris Hickok, Tom Pavelko and Jon Lee won the Q-102 heat races. The W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street stocks were scheduled next and came onto the track, but he rain also came at that time and washed away the rest of the night’s events. Next Saturday the W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stocks and the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Limited Latemodels will have double features – one feature to finish the June 13 program and then the feature for the June 20 program.
